Online Poker Glossary
There are a number of abbreviations and words related to poker that you will
need to know before you can start playing the game. This article will list
some of the most important terms and will provide a basic description and
explanation.
The first set of term deals with poker hand ranks:
“Royal Flush” is a combination of 5 cards: ace, king, queen,
jack, 10. These 5 cards should have the identical suit. Royal flushes
of different suits are considered equivalent. This is usually the best
possible poker combination.
A “Five of a Kind” is a combination of four cards of the same
value plus a wildcard (usually a joker). In a situation when several people
have five of a kind, a person who has a senior card value will win.
A “Straight Flush” is a combination of five cards that are
in order and have the identical suit. An ace can be either high or low.
“Royal Flush” is a version of straight flush.
“Four of a Kind” is a combination of four cards that have
the same value (four kings, for example). When several people have four
of a kind, a senior card value will win.
“Full House” is combination of three cards of the same value
and a pair. For example, you may have three queens and two jacks.
“Flush” is a combination where all five cards have the same
suit. The cards can have a different value, though.
“Straight” is a combination where all five cards are in order
(based on their value). When several people have a straight, a person
who has a highest straight combination will win.
“Three of a Kind” is a combination of three cards that have
the same value (three kings, for example). The remaining two cards should
have different values.
“Two Pair” is a combination of two pairs of cards with the
same value. For example, you may have two kings, two queens and some other
card.
“Pair” is a combination of two cards with the same value.
Remaining three cards should have different values.
“High Card” is a situation when player don’t have any
of the above ranked hands. In this case a player with a senior card wins.
Few other terms that we should mention include the ones used for betting
purposes. To call means to place a bet that is high enough to match up
the amount that was placed as bets since your previous bet. To raise means
to bet a larger amount then you would bet if you call. To fold means to
withdraw from the present hand without putting in any money.
