5 Card Draw Rules

Five card poker is a card game that has many different variations. This article will describe the basic poker rules that you will need to know before you can play this game. The game is played using a regular deck of cards with 52 cards in it. All the cards are broken down into 4 suits: diamonds, hearts, clubs and spades. The order of the cards is the following (in descending order of importance): ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2. Variations may also use two joker cards that are used as wild cards.

Poker hands will have five cards. The main goal of the game is to get the most valued hand (combination of cards) from those five dealt cards. These are the several possible combinations, in order of their importance: Royal Flush (ace, king, queen, jack, and 10 with identical suit), Straight Flush (five cards in order and with matching suit), Four of a Kind (four cards of identical value), Full House (three cards of identical value and a pair), Flush (five cards with matching suit), Straight (five cards in order), Three of a Kind (three cards of identical value), Two Pair (two couples of cards with identical worth), a Pair (couple of cards with identical value), and lastly High Card (the highest valued card). The more senior the poker hands are, the rarer they are.

After the betting limits are identified, the game begins. Each player would place a token bet in the pot. Next, the first card is dealt face down in the clockwise direction. The dealer will deal five cards to each player going around the circle, remaining the last person who will get a card in each rotation. After every player has received five cards, the remaining cards are placed in the middle of the table and the game begins.

After looking at the cards, each player (in specific order, one at a time) will have the option to place a bet. After the first bet was placed and betting was open, each player (going in some order around the table) will be able to “call” the other player (by placing a bet of the same value), “raise” the other player (see the player and then increase the bet), "check" (if not bets have been made you may simply check, passing your turn without betting or folding) or “fold” (quit without betting more money).

Next, players who didn’t fold will be able to replace up to three cards that they don’t want in hope of getting an even better poker hand. The betting begins again. The game will continue until there are no more bets or until all players but one decided to fold. The player with the highest hand wins the game.
